8 Discontinued Fast Food Sides We Wish Would Return

1. McDonald's Fried Apple Pies

Unless you’re over 35 or live in Hawaii, you’ve probably never tasted the good old Fried Apple Pies from McDonald’s.

Many grew up eating the McDonald’s Fried Apple Pie, so you can probably imagine the sadness when they discontinued this sweet and crunchy delight in 1992 due to health reasons.

Years later, Fried Apple Pies have been replaced with Baked Apple Pies that are also delicious but don’t have that special, nostalgic crunch to them.

2. KFC Potato Wedges

Everyone loved the crispy, chunky potato wedges from KFC until they decided to discontinue the side in 2020 to make room for something tastier on the permanent menu.

After a myriad of tweeted protests and complaints, KFC simply substituted the wedges with thinly sliced secret recipe fries.

Despite the fact that the new KFC fries offer a decent taste and just the right crunchiness, not being able to order the beloved potato wedges feels disappointing.

3. Pizza Hut P'Zone

P’Zone was a calzone-style pizza pocket beloved by thousands of Pizza Hut customers. With its debut in 2002 and all the buzz it generated, people were surprised as it was soon discontinued.

Luckily, P’Zone finally returned in 2019 and regained its popularity in no time.

However, as Pizza Hut couldn’t sell enough to justify keeping the P’Zone on the menu, they discontinued it again shortly after its return.

4. Chick-fil-A Cole Slaw

Despite the popularity of the cabbage-based side dish called Cole Slaw, Chick-fil-A discontinued it to replace it with new and healthier tastes.

If you’ve missed the cole slaw side, Chick-fil-A has shared the OG coleslaw recipe to make the side dish at home.

5. Burger King Cheesy Tots

Shredded potatoes and cheese coated in deep-fried flour offer a perfect blend between soft inside and crunchy outside. While Cheesy Tots have been among the highly sought-after snacks at Burger King, they decided to discontinue the side dish in 2021.

However, Burger King Cheesy Tots returned in 2023, during the Tis The Cheeson season.

Currently, Cheesy Tots are a temporary item on the menu. Customers are still hopeful that Burger King will have the snack back eventually.

6. Arby's Potato Cakes

With the aim to add new menu items, Arby’s discontinued its popular Potato Cakes in 2021. They were replaced by Crinkle Fries and Curly Fries on the permanent menu.

After disappearing from the menus, Arby’s Potato Cakes made a comeback on July 1 for a limited time, only at participating locations nationwide.

7. Jack in the Box Mozzarella Sticks

Jack in the Box has discontinued multiple menu items, leaving its customers disappointed. Mozzarella Sticks were among the few sides that have been removed from the menu.

8. Popeyes' Cajun Rice

Consisting of Cajun, creole seasonings, and veggies, Popeyes’ Cajun Rice has been offering a unique yet balanced taste for years.

Unfortunately, the dish was discontinued in 2021, as part of a simplification initiative.

While Popeyes gave customers Cajun rice for its 50th anniversary in 2022, the dish hasn’t been returned to the permanent menu.
